A few weeks ago Friends of the Earth (FoE) Gibraltar launched a new project to advance the joint environmental themes of "reduce, reuse, recycle". That first stage involved a very successful auction in the Garrison Library to raise funds for the next phase of the initiative. In essence it's a kind of competition to raise awareness about pressing ecological issues among young people. It's not by preaching to them but by actually involving them in using their imagination and fresh perspectives to show the rest of us how to adjust our lifestyles to sustainable progress. So, children, teenagers and young adults are invited to submit their ideas, one or more projects aimed to save energy, reduce pollution or optimise the management of non-renewable sources. Any medium will be accepted, from written articles, to paintings, from blueprints to actual devices, from short stories about environmentally-friendly utopias to flashy campaign posters and slogans, from photographs to promo videos, as longs as it puts across the pro-eco message.
FoE co-coordinator Lyana Armstrong-Emery hopes to be overwhelmed with innovative ideas after the challenge is launched on 5th June, World Environment Day (WED), when guidelines on how and what to enter will be explained in detail. Then young people will have all summer to fire up their imagination - and show off what nifty solutions they are capable of when before the deadline for handing in entries for an exhibition to show the general public in October.
Yesterday we supported the protest at Pinar Del Rey near San Roque. It was part of a series of demonstrations against the planned road (autovia) and building construction project across the nature reserve. Many groups and individuals from both sides of the border were there.

Friends of the Earth, Gibraltar will be holding an auction of items submitted by the public in the Garrison Library on the 26th April (during Earth Day week) to raise funds for a special project. Sellers forms will be available at Beacon Press, Cloister Ramp from the 15th to the 21st April. Items can be viewed on Friday 25th April from 3 to 6p.m. and Saturday the 26th April from 12 to 3 p.m. The Auction will be the first step leading up to a special competition and exhibition for local youth on World Environment Day in June. The enterprise is designed therefore to encourage 'eco' ideas, inventions and initiatives from young people. In this way, say FoE, two important annual dates in the environmentalist calendar, Earth Day and WED, will be bridged this year by an important project to help Gibraltar's next generation address 'green' challenges.
Friends of the Earth, Gibraltar today recommended a comprehensive environmentalist website. It includes a wide range of 'rebuttals' to use in countering people who deny global warming or climate change.

Friends of the Earth, Gibraltar announced today that it fully supports and endorses the newly-launched 'No to Plastic Bags' (NO2PB) campaign.FoE Co-ordinator Lyana Armstrong-Emery commented " Yes, we fully back the campaign. Indeed, we are already working in it with Gibraltarian people from many other groups and none on this issue which is so important for us all."The Campaign is working to reduce the large-scale use of non-biodegradeable plastic bags in Gibraltar. It seeks to replace them with biodegradeable ones or re-usable fabric bags.
